Broken raw rice 2 cup

Curry leaves 12 leaves

Asafoetida ¼ tea sp


Take water in a kadai and allow it to boil. To the boiling water add broken rice, salt and 6 curry leaves (chopped). Stir it thoroughly until it joins well. Close it well and allow it to cook, stirring occasionally. Continue it until the rice is cooked and the water has evaporated. Now add scraped coconut and mix well. The dough looks thick. Keep it aside in a plate to cool down to a bearable temperature.

Make balls out of the cooked dough and place them in a steamer. Steam it for 15 minutes and keep it aside.

To a kadai, pour oil, pop mustards and fry chopped green chillies, ginger, curry leaves and asafoetida. Add the steamed balls and roast until a light golden colour crust forms.

Kara kozhukkattai is ready to serve.


  • You can use this directly and if so, take rice to water 1:2.
  • You can also dry the broken rice out in the sun and store in an air tight container.
