Horse Gram Curry

Curry leaves 7 leaves
Asafoetida ¼ tea sp
Onion chopped 2 medium
Tomato chopped 2 medium
Chilli powder 1 tea sp
Pepper powder ½ tea sp
Coriander powder 1 tea spoon
Garam masala powder 1/4tea sp
Salt enough to taste
Turmeric powder ½ tea spoon
Scraped coconut ¾ 150ml cup
Coriander leaves chopped 1 tb sp


In a pressure cooker, add soaked horse gram, pour 3 cups of water, add salt, asafoetida and close the lid. Let it boil until steam rushes out and then place weight. Let it whistle once in high flame and thrice in low flame. Keep the cooker aside to cool down.

Blend scraped coconut, with ½ tb sp ginger, ½ tea sp coriander powder and ¼ cup water to a smooth paste. Keep the paste aside.

Heat a kadai, pour oil, pop mustards, add green chilli, ginger, curry leaves and fry until raw smell goes. To this add onion and a pinch of salt, sauté it well (until it turns pink) .Add tomatoes and sauté again. To this add turmeric, salt (enough for this gravy), pepper powder, 1/2tea sp coriander powder, garam masala powder, chilli powder, mix well until raw smell goes and the tomatoes turn mushy. Add coconut paste, 1 cup of water and stir until raw smell of coconut paste goes away. To this add cooked horse gram and boil until the gravy thickens joins with the horse gram. Add coriander leaves and the curry is ready to serve.


  • Soak the horse gram for at least 12 hrs.
