Ladies Finger Kichadi

Ladies finger or okra (vendakka) is a common crop of south India, which can be grown in kitchen yards or even in grow bags. Kichadi is an unavoidable dish and the first served dish in Kerala sadya.

Oil 1 tb sp
Mustard seeds 2 tea sp
Salt ½ tea sp
Turmeric ¼ tea sp
Scraped coconut 1 ½ cup
Curd 1 cup


Stage 1

Wash okra in water, trim its edges and slice this in to small thin rounds.

Heat the kadai and heat 1 tb sp oil. To the hot oil add mustard and let it pop.

When the mustard is popped, add chopped green chillies, chopped ginger and curry leaves. Let it fry.

stage 4

To this add chopped ladies finger, ¼ tea sp salt and turmeric. Mix it well and close the lid and cook for 5 minutes, stirring in between. Roast the cooked ladies finger until it forms a golden brown color. Keep it aside.

Crush scraped coconut with 1 green chilli, ¼ tea sp salt and 1 tea sp mustard. Blend it with curd to a smooth paste.

Transfer the blended paste to a serving bowl and add the fried ladies finger to it. Mix well and serve.


  • To avoid sticking of ladies finger, avoid stirring with ladle while frying. Instead toss the pan.
